Where the week goes

  • Chasing clients for documents eats hours every week, and it isn't billable.
  • New clients take hours to onboard, with the same information typed into several systems.
  • Month-end categorization and cleanup is slow, repetitive work.
  • Hard client emails, like late payments or missing documents, take longer than they should.
  • Client calls turn into notes and to-dos someone has to write up afterward.

Common questions

Some are. A Journal of Accountancy piece profiled four firms under 10 people that built intake forms, onboarding prototypes and client feedback tools with Claude and ChatGPT, and used AI tax research tools for client work.

Only in tools that don't train on your data and that you've vetted, and tax preparers have extra rules on using and sharing return information. Practitioners on an Intuit panel advised redacting anything confidential.

With whatever eats the most unbillable time, usually document chasing or client email. Both have low-risk first steps.
