Screen web leads before they reach an attorney

An AI chat on your website asks the screening questions, filters out matters you don't take, and sends good leads to intake with the details filled in.

Worth it if

You get steady web inquiries and many aren't a fit.

Skip it if

You get few web leads; a simple form is enough.

What gets set up

An AI chat on your website identifies itself as AI, asks what the matter is about, where and when it happened and whether they already have a lawyer, then routes good leads to intake. LawDroid builds these chatbots; Lawmatics handles intake and follow-up. It must follow advertising rules and avoid giving legal advice.

The ABA Journal rounds up AI intake and lead-screening tools

A Practice Technology column surveys virtual receptionists and AI chat for small firms, including AI-powered website chat that captures and qualifies leads.

What they did. Describes tools like Smith.ai's AI-first receptionist, Intaker's AI website chat and LawDroid's virtual intake.

How it went. A survey of options, not one firm's results.

Worth knowing. The author works at MyCase, a practice management vendor. She warns that outsourcing intake means sharing firm data, which triggers confidentiality duties.

Why it matters

Web inquiries arrive at all hours, and many are for practice areas you don't handle. Sorting them takes attorney or staff time.

How I estimated the hours

1 to 2 hrs a week: 10 to 20 web inquiries a week at 5 to 10 minutes each to read, screen and route, mostly handled by the chat. Rounded down.

Questions

Giving legal advice, claiming to be a person, and contacting people who already have a lawyer. Florida's opinion suggests screening questions for that last one.

Florida says chatbots used for intake must follow the lawyer advertising rules, including no misleading content.
