What goes wrong: lawyers sanctioned for ChatGPT's fake cases
In Mata v. Avianca, a federal judge in New York sanctioned two lawyers and their firm for a brief that cited cases ChatGPT made up.
What they did. A lawyer used ChatGPT for research, and the brief cited decisions that didn't exist.
How it went. The court found bad faith, imposed a $5,000 sanction, and ordered them to notify their client and the judges whose names were falsely used.
Worth knowing. This is why every AI citation and fact has to be checked against the source.
