Comparison

AIMention vs. Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit

Semrush built an AI-visibility module for brands with SEO teams. AIMention built a $30 report for business owners. The price gap — $30 a report versus about $1,188 a year — is the honest summary.

The short version

Semrush’s AI Visibility Toolkit is daily prompt-rank tracking and share-of-voice analytics, sold at $99 a month per domain, billed annually. It makes sense inside a company that already lives in Semrush dashboards. AIMention is a one-time $30 diagnosis of your website’s AI readability with a prioritized fix list.

For a local business, the practical difference isn’t features — it’s that one of these is a purchase and the other is a commitment. Roughly $1,188 a year, per domain, is agency-budget money. And on small, sparse-data brands, reviewers have documented the toolkit’s share-of-voice numbers swinging wildly — the data gets more reliable the bigger your brand is, which is exactly backwards for a small business buyer.

What each actually costs

The toolkit’s published price is $99 a month billed annually — roughly $1,188 up front — and that covers one domain with 25 tracked prompts. Each additional domain is another $99 a month; each additional 50 prompts is $60 a month. Semrush also bundles AI visibility into its Semrush One plans, which start at $199 a month for Starter. There is no free trial of the toolkit itself, though Semrush offers a separate free one-off AI visibility checker.

None of that is unreasonable for the market Semrush serves. But a single-location business doing the math — $1,188 a year against a $30 one-time report — isn’t comparing prices, it’s comparing categories. Your score is free — no credit card. The full report with every fix, prioritized, is a one-time $30. If the report shows you nothing worth fixing, there’s a money-back guarantee; Semrush’s annual billing offers no equivalent exit.

What Semrush AI Toolkit does better

If you already pay for Semrush, the toolkit slots AI visibility into dashboards, client reports, and workflows your team uses daily — that integration is real value no standalone tool matches. Its prompt research is genuinely strong: seeing which questions people ask AI in your category, at scale, can drive an entire content program. And for national brands with a real AI-answer footprint, daily share-of-voice tracking against named competitors is exactly the right instrument.

What AIMention does better

AIMention wins everywhere the Semrush toolkit assumes resources you don’t have. It requires no platform learning curve — you get a scored report, not software. It audits the website itself: structured content, factual clarity, structured data markup, authority signals, citations, and local relevance — the structural gaps that determine whether AI systems can read and trust your site at all. Reviewers’ documented volatility on sparse-data brands is also worth repeating: at local scale, the audit’s deterministic scoring gives you a stabler picture than simulated share-of-voice.

Choose AIMention if…

  • You’re a local business, not a brand with an SEO team — you want answers, not another analytics platform
  • $30–$60 a year (reports are $30 each) versus roughly $1,188 a year is the difference between “worth a look” and “not happening”
  • Your site has structural AI-readability gaps — the six-dimension audit tells you what to fix before monitoring would even show movement
  • Sparse-data volatility makes big-platform share-of-voice numbers unreliable at local scale anyway

Choose Semrush AI Toolkit if…

  • You already pay for Semrush and want AI visibility inside the same dashboards and client reports
  • You need daily prompt-level rank tracking and share-of-voice trends against named competitors over months
  • You’re an agency producing client-ready reports that combine SEO and AI visibility
  • You’re a national brand with enough AI-answer footprint for share-of-voice data to be stable and meaningful

Where AIMention falls short

  • No ongoing monitoring — it’s a point-in-time audit, so there are no week-over-week trend lines
  • Each run is a separate $30 report — re-checking after your fixes is another $30, not an included re-scan
  • AI Presence Scan covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude — it does not track Google AI Overviews or Copilot
  • No competitor share-of-voice dashboards or prompt-rank tracking
  • Scores one website per report — agencies managing many clients need a report per site
  • Built for local and small businesses — not designed for national brands or enterprise reporting

Where Semrush AI Toolkit falls short

  • Costs stack fast: $99 a month is per domain and billed annually — roughly $1,188 up front for one site, before prompt or user add-ons
  • Reviewers question the ROI — one CMO quoted in Rankability’s review: “I can’t say this tool is worth $99/month… not for a startup and not for a big brand either”
  • Small and local sites get erratic data — reviewers documented share-of-voice swinging from 100% to 0% in weeks on sparse-data brands
  • Recommendations are criticized as generic AI-written advice rather than an actionable fix list
  • No free trial on the AI toolkit — the annual commitment is the real entry price
  • It’s a module inside an enterprise SEO platform — a steep learning curve if all you want is to know why ChatGPT skips your business

How we compared them

Every price, platform, and feature claim on this page was verified against the official pages listed in Sources on July 19, 2026. Where a vendor doesn’t publish a number, we say “not published” instead of guessing, and third-party estimates are labeled as such. Review themes come from the cited G2 and Capterra pages, not our opinion of a competitor.

Disclosure: we make AIMention, one of the tools on this page. We have tried to be as honest about its limitations as about everyone else’s, and every scenario below where another tool is the better fit says so plainly.

Common questions

For most single-location businesses, the math is hard to justify: $99 a month billed annually is roughly $1,188 a year for one domain, and reviewers report that share-of-voice data gets erratic on small, sparse-data brands. It earns its price for brands and agencies with real AI-answer footprint to track.

Not the toolkit itself. Semrush does offer a separate free AI Search Visibility Checker that produces a one-off score with a free account — useful as a snapshot, but not the tracking product.

Semrush tracks how often your brand appears in AI answers to a set of prompts, daily, against competitors. AIMention audits your website itself — scoring six dimensions of AI readability and producing a prioritized fix list — then runs a 48-answer AI Presence Scan as a snapshot. One is a monitoring dashboard; the other is a diagnosis with instructions.

That’s the sensible order for a growing business: fix the structural issues a $30 audit finds first, then add monitoring once there’s upward movement worth tracking and budget to sustain it.
