Reddit Is Quietly Deciding Whether AI Recommends Your Business

By Charlie Riske  |  April 16, 2026

You run a landscaping company. You've got five stars on Google, a clean website, and a full schedule through June. But when a homeowner in your city asks ChatGPT for a landscaper recommendation, your name never comes up.

The business that does get mentioned? A competitor with fewer reviews, a worse website, and one thing you don't have: people talking about them on Reddit.

That's not a hypothetical. It's how AI discovery actually works right now.

Reddit is one of AI's favorite sources

Reddit appears in 37% of all Google search results and shows up in 95% of product review queries. According to Sitebulb's research on Reddit and AI visibility, the platform is consistently one of the most cited sources in both Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT.

That means when someone asks an AI tool for a recommendation, the AI is scanning Reddit threads for mentions of real businesses, real opinions, and real conversations. If your business shows up in those threads, you're in the running. If it doesn't, you're invisible.

One experiment showed a 3x jump in AI mentions

An SEO firm called Local SEO Guide ran a controlled test to see what Reddit brand mentions actually do to AI visibility. They tracked a SaaS brand across 80 prompts in Google's AI Overviews, measuring how often the brand was cited.

Before the test, the brand appeared in roughly 8 to 9% of prompts. After one month of consistent mentions and comments in relevant Reddit threads, that number tripled. When they stopped, it dropped right back down.

The takeaway is clear. Reddit mentions directly influence whether AI recommends you. But the effect only lasts if the conversation keeps happening. Spam doesn't work. What works is earning the kind of organic mentions that keep showing up because people genuinely found you useful.

Reddit's influence is shrinking, but getting sharper

Here's the twist. Reddit's overall share of AI citations actually dropped about 50% between October 2025 and January 2026, according to Conductor's analysis of Reddit AI citation trends. That sounds like bad news for Reddit, but it's not.

During that same period, the share of AI responses where Reddit was the only cited source grew by 31%. In other words, AI systems are citing Reddit less often overall, but when they do cite it, they trust it completely. Reddit went from being one voice in the room to being the only voice in the room for certain types of questions.

The questions where Reddit dominates are the ones your customers are asking. Things like "is this business actually worth it" and "who do you recommend for this in my area." Those are opinion, experience, and comparison questions. And if no brand has published a better answer, AI pulls from the Reddit thread instead.

What this means for a local business

You don't need to become a Reddit power user. But you should understand that AI systems are assembling their recommendations from conversations happening in places you might not be watching.

One example from the Sitebulb research stands out. A pub owner in Seattle put up a simple page on his site titled "watch Premier League in Seattle." He did nothing else. No Reddit posts, no social promotion. But people in local Reddit threads and Facebook groups started mentioning the pub organically whenever someone asked where to watch soccer. Those mentions fed directly into AI results. The pub started appearing in AI Overviews, at the top of Google, and in ChatGPT recommendations.

The pub didn't game the system. It just made it easy for people to talk about them. That's the entire strategy.

The gap is yours to close

The Conductor research puts it plainly: when Reddit wins an AI citation, it's usually because no brand showed up with a better answer. That's the opportunity. AI is looking for clear, specific, trustworthy information about your business. If you haven't given it any, Reddit threads and competitor mentions fill the void.
