ChatGPT Now Uses Yelp Reviews to Recommend Local Businesses. Here Is Why That Should Worry You.

By Charlie Riske  |  July 24, 2026

A nail salon owner two towns over has a Yelp page she has not opened since 2021. Old photos. A few reviews sitting there with no reply. Hours that are wrong because she changed them last spring. She figures none of it matters, because customers find her on Google and Instagram now. As of this week, that forgotten page is feeding straight into ChatGPT. And I think a lot of owners like her are about to lose jobs they will never even know they were up for.

Here is what happened. On July 23, Yelp signed a deal to license its reviews, ratings, photos, and business information to OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT. When someone asks ChatGPT for a good nail salon nearby, the answer can now pull from Yelp, with Yelp reviews and links shown right inside the response. Search Engine Land reported the details, including that the deal covers Yelp's full library of about 330 million reviews across more than 8 million businesses.

Why ChatGPT needed Yelp in the first place

Local questions have always been ChatGPT's weak spot. Ask it for a plumber or a taco place and it used to give vague, outdated answers, because it had no fresh local data to work from. That gap is exactly why this deal matters. Yelp's own CEO said it plainly: if you want to answer local questions, you really need Yelp.

So here is my read on it. ChatGPT just went from guessing about local businesses to reading real reviews before it answers. That is not a small upgrade. That is the difference between an assistant that shrugs and one that hands your competitor the job.

Yelp is not dead. It just became infrastructure.

Most owners I talk to wrote Yelp off years ago. When I run an AIMention scan, the Yelp page is almost always the one nobody has touched. They claimed it once, replied to a review or two, then drifted to Google Business Profile when Google took over local search. The page did not vanish. It just sat there going stale.

For a long time that was a fair bet. Yelp traffic had faded, so a neglected page cost you a few clicks at most. That math just flipped. In my view, the people still treating Yelp as a dead platform are making the most expensive mistake in local marketing right now, because that page is now one of the sources an AI reads before it decides whether to recommend you.

Why a stale Yelp page probably hurts you now

Understand what ChatGPT can now do with your page. OpenAI has not said exactly how it weighs Yelp data, but here is how these systems tend to work. It does not just count your star rating. It reads the words in your reviews, your photos, your categories, and your details, and forms an impression of who you are and who you serve.

If your page is unclaimed, your hours are wrong, or your last five reviews mention a problem you never answered, that is the impression it forms. A salon with current photos, correct information, and owner replies looks like a real, active business. A page frozen in 2021 looks like a guess. And I will bet on this: AI skips the guesses and recommends the competitor it can describe with confidence.

It gets more direct soon. Yelp has said its Request a Quote feature is coming to ChatGPT, which means a customer could contact you for a quote without ever leaving the chat. If your Yelp presence is thin, you are not in that conversation at all.

How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT this week

Open your Yelp page and look at it like a stranger would. Claim it if you never did. Fix your hours, address, phone, and categories so they match your website exactly, because AI cross checks those sources and gets nervous when they disagree. Then add a few current photos and reply to your recent reviews, especially the critical ones. You do not need to be clever. You need to look present.

The owners who tidy up their page now will be the answer ChatGPT gives while their competitors are still asking why they never come up. Want to see what AI actually says about your business today?
